City of Melbourne Library rave review
As part my idle new lifestyle as a TAFE student I have taken to wandering aimlessly as much as time permits. Today I chose the working-week streets and laneways of Melbourne CBD. The lunchtime crowd had returned to their desks and there was space to look and take it all in. I wound my way into the (relatively) new City of Melbourne Library on Flinders Lane and was intrigued at the sound of a piano coming from level one - home to fiction, shhhh quiet rooms, and the temporary gallery space. I found a slight, grey haired woman playing an upright piano, her luggage tucked in safely beside her and her focus anywhere but on the pedestrian details of living life on the streets.
A helpful librarian explained that at various times of the day anyone worth listening to can sit and tinkle the communal ebony and ivory and entertain the population of readers, researchers or retreaters. And while you listen you can enjoy the written word, savour the sights and watch the weirds and wonderfuls go by.
I am not going to give you program details - have a walk through your city and keep your eyes and ears peeled for Natalie and her musical generosity.
